I have been working for CBU Athletics for the last two years and this year I had the privilege of shooting many men's basketball games. I covered everything from Midnight Madness until the last playoff game. Throughout the season, I tried many different techniques and angles. I tried to capture moments that told stories and not just showed the action. My favorite thing to do was use a wide angle lens and show the whole scene and make a more historical image, then I would switch to a zoom lens and shoot the action really tight so there was no distractions in the frames. I had a great time capturing and getting to know the team. Here are my five favorite images of the season.
This was from Midnight Madness. I had pictured this shot before the event, so when it came time to capture it, I positioned myself and just waited for the right player to dunk. The lighting and the smoke really make the image. My favorite part of it is the fact that it was taken at a real event, I could have easily got lights and created it, but it makes the image tell a bigger story. I few weeks ago, Gatorade actually bought this photo and used it for their #Belikemike campaign. Their Instagram post with this photo is here
About half way through the season I started using a remote camera. This means that I was able to capture the same play from two different point of views. After looking around at a couple options, I came across the Phottix strato ii multi. I picked this up for around $100 and it has worked perfectly. I put the remote camera in spots that I could not stay and then I shot from different angles.
Here are two locations I put the cameras.
It took some time to get it right and everything, but it was fun and I was rewarded with some shots that I otherwise would not have gotten. I am excited to start using them for other sports as well. Below are some examples of what I was able to capture with the remote.
I shot most games during the season. I was always trying new things and looking how I could make the best picture possible. I learned a whole lot more about capturing basketball and I am already dreaming up new things to do next season.
